Turn, Turn, Turn

Before you think you’ve arrived at the wrong BLOG, I have decided to expand what I include here to some of the things I have been writing about spiritual things that are in step with my personal Music Business Background. I believe many people in the arts industries – movies, acting, writers – are going to begin to awaken to their need for more heart stability that can only be found in the Lord. They are just people.

I have been laboring under a couple of wrong ideas about my calling as a Christian. One is that I always had to “turn the other cheek” in relationships that have proven to be so chronic in disrespecting me that I began to shrink as a person in dread of what would be done next. I thought to be a witness to how good the LORD is, I had to take abuse silently.
The other thing is about crying. I have cried a lot over the years – I’ve never not allowed myself to cry – but over the past months I have been crying so much. The TV shows I’ve chosen to watch have wrung so many tears out of me – relating to the sadness of the characters I was watching like McLeod’s Daughters is one example from several.
Human relationships can be so full of sorrows. I wondered if I was losing it or doing the wrong thing watching TV programs that made me cry, but I also had the impression that God was giving me a pressure valve to let it all out. All the stored up personal tears.
Some of the TV situations I cried over, I had nothing in my life like the characters went through, but tears still poured out of my eyes for their pain. It was empathy for the things other people experience and grief over. There is nothing wrong with letting ourselves feel the sorrows of the human experience – for ourselves and for others. I would rather freely weep than be so blocked from feelings that I rarely cried. The world in which we live, there is plenty to cry over.
Turn, Turn, Turn continues
This morning I remembered Tammy Faye Bakker, who was always crying, being touched by the ministry to people whose hearts were broken. Tammy became famous for her black tear trails of mascara running down her cheeks. I have always bought waterproof mascara since becoming a young woman. Crying has always been easy for me. Pent up emotions are no good for anyone.
But I remember how the godless tormented Tammy Bakker for her tears after the scandal broke about Jessica Hawn, a hussy if I’ve ever seen one! Tammy was a woman hurting from the scandal that broke, but evil people everywhere could not stop tormenting her for crying. They called her emotionally unstable, and other evil things. Instead of embracing Tammy’s sorrow and pain, they kicked her all the more. Some people are like that, they in fact delight in taking their shots.
It sent a message out far and wide to Christians like me watching and unfortunately it spoke to me that I had to put on a brave face even in deep pain and sorrow if I was going to project a good Christian witness. I no longer believe that.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
What profit has he that works in that wherein he labors? I have seen the travail, which God has given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He has made every thing beautiful in his time: also he has set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.
